Omega Xi Chapter History

Omega Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was chartered as a Graduate Chapter in Easton, PA on March 10, 1978. Easton is a part of the Lehigh Valley which includes Allentown and Bethlehem. The driving force in the establishment of the chapter was Brother Horace Worthington, formerly of Tau Beta chapter. The 8 Charter Members were Neil Simpson, Mu 66, Horace Worthington, Raeford McIlwaine, (AH 73), Nate Jenkins, Andrew Rodriquez, Thomas Wright, Dorman Waters, and Albert (AL) Kaiser, Beta Epsilon 1953. The chapters first line of new Brothers, known as 8 Pieces of Gold, were Andre Stevens, Tyrone Knighton, A. Mark Robinson, Karl Abel, Frank Fournier, Harry Wood, Albert Calloway, and Bruce Williams. Omega Psi Phi had previously established itself in the area in 1973 at East Stroudsburg State College, now East Stroudsburg University. Alpha Eta undergraduate chapter worked closely with the new Graduate chapter.

As time passed the Brothers agreed to represent the fraternity in the northeast corridor of the state including the Pocono Mountain area. Omega Xi Chapter continues to serve the Lehigh Valley and Pocono regions of Pennsylvania in the 21st century.

Omega Xi faced many challenges in the early 80’s including inactivity. By 1989, the chapter began a slow reactivation process with the efforts of Brothers Wilson Rice (Clark Atlanta University), attending Grad School at Lehigh University, Anthony Young, attending Grad School at East Stroudsburg, Bryant Ashford (Tau Chapter) attending Grad School at Lehigh University and Hamlet Herring (Gamma Epsilon Chapter).

In 1990, Omega Xi and the Alpha Eta undergraduate chapter At East Stroudsburg University combined efforts to seek new members. A new line began with 3 young men from East Stroudsburg University and a separate line of 3 from Lehigh University were started at the same time. The three young men from Lehigh, Alex Perry, Jr., Max Serran (Fitzgerald Marcelin, MD), and Troy Archie, Esquire, were guided into Omega by Epsilon Pi chapter in Chester, PA. This helped tremendously in the reactivation of Omega Xi chapter in the Lehigh Valley.

The mid to late 90’s proved to be challenging times for the fraternity and its presence in the Lehigh Valley. Low membership on the Graduate level and changes in membership requirements at the undergraduate level resulted in a drop in activity in the area.  Since 1999, Omega has seen a slow but steady building of membership and action in the Valley.  The transition from the 90’s and the end of the 20th century to the Chapters resurgence in the 21st century has been an inspiring time.

In 2004, Omega Xi Chapter hosted its first Second District Shirtsleeve Conference in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The event brought 200 Omega men to the Valley, one of the largest business gatherings of black men in the area’s history. Omega Xi also initiated 8 new members in 2004, Jerome Pointer, Bernard Richardson, Bryan Twyman, Garrett (Bo) Hall, in the spring and Stevie Draper, Marcus Arter, Shomari Bomani, and James Drumheiser, in the fall.

The chapter has regular programs and activities in the Lehigh Valley and Pocono Region of eastern Pennsylvania. Omega Xi chapter is active and poised to grow in the future.

Just remember when you travel west from New York and New Jersey into Pennsylvania, you’re in Omega Xi country. When you travel east across the country, across Route 80, you have to pass through Omega Xi country to get to New Jersey and New York. We’re in a great place and it’s only going to get better.
